in 1969, Native American activists took over Alcatraz and held the island for nineteen months. Though the famous former prison was known worldwide, they argued that they had "discovered it" - just as Europeans had "discovered" America. It was one of the wittiest protests in history, designed to raise awareness about the deplorable treatment of Native Americans. And to a large extent it worked. It drew attention from big names like Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda and Creedence Clearwater Revival, and inspired Nixon to change a horrible policy.
