With Chris away this week, Jo and Alex tackle Romans chapter 5 as a two-hander, opening with a read-through of verses 1–11. They start with the "where does this chapter sit?" question. After the argument of chapters 1–4, Paul pivots: Jesus returns to the centre of the text after being largely absent since the "mission statement" of 1:16–17, and the vocabulary shifts from justification language toward grace, the Spirit, and life. Jo and Alex read the chapter's opening "peace" as a pointed contrast with the Pax Romana, a peace won by conquest, versus the Old Testament's promised peace realised through the Davidic king.
