On the one hand, we need to burn our afflictions with the fire of repentance, and on the other hand, the water of good dharma is needed to flush away the impurities and to moisten our pure mind.  The core of repentance is to admit the sins we have committed and vow never to commit again. Repentance is different from regret. It is just like washing clothes. The more we wash, the cleaner clothes are. The more we repent, the more relieved we feel at heart.
