Jesus is the Christmas gift who God sent to the earth 2,000 years ago. Through him, we receive the gift of eternal life, sonship, forgiveness of sins, and the gift of righteousness. These are things that we cannot earn, but are freely given to us, because of Jesus and his sacrifice on Calvary. If you have to work to receive something, it is no longer a gift. It is an obligation.
