There are two great dangers when it comes to the purpose of our work and careers. The first is the danger of lacking any sense of purpose. When our days are filled with hours of seemingly purposeless activity, we’re prone to feelings of angst and confusion. The second is the danger of working for the wrong purpose. When we have found meaning in an aspect of our work that is actually unhelpful, we can fall into the deceptive trap of pursuing goals at the expense of the things that truly do matter. We can use unhealthy, unwise, perhaps unethical means to achieve our goals all the while justifying and excusing our behavior in pursuit of those goals. The story of Joseph in the Bible offers us a powerful and liberating purpose for our work.
