Many of us have been taught to "be nice" rather than to be honest. We ignore our own deeper instincts and don't develop needed survival skills in the face of the darkness, danger or selfish motives of others. Date rape is all too common, as is bullying in the workplace of adults as well as it is with kids at school. There are predators and there are prey. It is a matter of health and survival to recognize which is which.
