  • The Northern Trails Strategy

    Val and Faith are in the studio again after having been blown there on their respective bikes by the blustery spring winds. After sharing our bike moments we take a look at some news including plans in Perth to introduce more streets with 30kph speed limits after increases of 300% in cycling participation was counted on streets with the lower limit. The volume of cars in residential streets was also lowered. Moreland Council and VicRoads are currently working to trial 30kph streets at the moment while Yarra ran a trial not too long ago. The Northern Trails Strategy 2022 builds on the 2016 strategy and is currently open for consultation. As a collaborative project between Moreland, Darebin, Banyule, Hume, Whittlesea, and Nillumbik Councils, Northern Trails 2022 aims to ensure integration of planning, advocacy and development efforts, while making recommendations for trail infrastructure, management, marketing and improvement projects. You can find detailed information about the project here as well as a survey

  • RIP Iris Dixon Australian Cycling Legend

    Today Faith and Val pay homage to Iris Dixon, a champion of Australian cycling and a cracking story teller. Iris Dixon passed away at the end of last week, aged 91. Iris was an incredible cyclist, Australian Cycling Hall of fame inductee and sixteen time national champion. She dissed our bikes when she was our studio guest in 2013. You can read more about Iris in Monique Hanley's article A ride through history with Australian cycling legend Iris Dixon.One thing that struck us was how much Iris would have enjoyed the inaugral Tour de France Femme which kicked off this weekend. We also discuss the changes to the No Left Turn for motorists at the cnr of Victoria Parade and Brunswick street and increasing cycnicism amongst people who use bicycles to get around about State government commitments to active transport.

  • Remembering Dervla Murphy

    Val and Faith are back in the studio and kick off the show wtih their bike moments before taking a look at some news.Overnight Jai Hindley became the first Australian to win the Giro d'Italia after an amazing three weeks. While here in Melbourne we remember the very sad death of Yukako, in the CBD last week. Yukako left behind a child and partner and many family and friends who will be devastated by her loss, after a truck collided with her on King Street.  Yet another senseless death in a city with only minimal commitments to safe infrastructure for riders prompted Melbourne Councillor Rohan Leppart to voice his frustrations, particulalry about the contrast with cities like Sydney. We then rememebr Irish writer and adventure rider Dervla Murphy and her fantastic writing about riding through some of the more adventurous parts of the world over the past sixty years.     Val mans the studio solo today as Faith deals with a family whittling emergency.Today's program focuses on an interview with planning consultant Stephen Rowley of RCI PLaning about the recent VCAT decision not to issue a permit for Bunnings on Glenlyon Road, Brunswick.
