Kicking off a new year in the studio
20/01/2019Val and Faith are back in the studio after the summer break and kick things off sharing their bicycle moments. We move on to news, including Denali's local commute, the MACSA's discouraging 'safety' messages addressing cyclists and the Queen's Parade detour. Val shares an update on helmet techologies that can reduce the injuries to cyclists wearing helmets that are becoming more accessible, before we move on to some upcoming events. Commuter Cycles are hosting a Summer Solstice Camp Out, the 2019 Bike Rave date has been anounced and Bike West are hosting their AGM in February.

Brompton Junction Melbourne, Save Noble Park Velodrome update + Hunt 1000

The Farren Collection and Shepparton's Motor Museum
25/11/2018The show is off to a much more prosaic start this morning than usual as a last minute hitch means that we are forced to carry on without Val and his dulcet tones are sorely missed! Faith is joined in the studio by guest Charlie Farren and we each share a bicycle moment. We also take a quick look at this year's Hunt 1000 which has been an adventure packed ride, even before the Grand Depart, with snowfalls and blizzards. You can follow the riders progress here. Talk turns to the Farren Collection and Charlie explains the history and development of this world-renowned bicycle collection, the late Paul Farren's passion and commitment in developing the collection, and the era of the bicycle that is the focus of the collection. While the collection, housed in Melbourne in a private museum, encompasses over 200 bicycles a new home has been found for forty of those bicycles at the Shepparton Motor Museum (Soon to be MOVE), making these amazing machines and the history embodied within them accessible to many

Modacity and Building the Cycling City
18/11/2018Val and Faith are joined in the studio this week by Melissa and Chris Buntlett of Canadian agency Modacity. We share our bike moments before taking a brief look at some local news including; last chance to have your say on the shape of the Shrine to Sea boulevard for pedestrians and cyclists and Skyrail for Upfield and the chance to make sure this ensures a badly needed upgrade for the Upfield bike path. Melissa and Chris describe how they first came to give up the use of their car ten years ago in Vancouver and the journey they've been on since then, with their two children, sharing stories about urban mobility and the ways in which multi-modal transport which embraces the bicycle can create more open and welcoming environments for everyone. Bikepacking New Zealand's Old Ghost Road
28/10/2018Val and Faith are joined in the studio today by Aroha Yates and we all share our bike moments to kick things off. We then take a look at cycling news including where you'll find Melbourne's most active commuters, St Kilda bike lanes a vote winner, the Walking and Cycling Conference underway in Bendigo and a cost benefit analysis of bicycle helmets in Germany. The book pile - new books with a cycling bent
14/10/2018Val and Faith take to the studio and kick things off sharing their respective bike moments, in which Val catches a lift up a hill and Faith finds it's the little things that matter. We take a look at both local news and some from further afield with Val's update on the never-ending IOC and Russia saga, the opening of the Djerring Trail in south-eastern Melbourne and the study documenting drivers being distracted 45% of the time. Moving on to our reading lists we take a look at several new books for those interested in different aspects of cycling history. We start with a brief recap on a book we mentioned a few week's ago, Revolution: How the Bicycle Reinvented Modern Britain by William Manners. Next up is Rupert Guiness' Power to the Pedal. The Story of Australian Cycling, a promising-looking history despite the claim on many sites selling the book (not by the author) to cover 200 years of cycling in Australia. A surprise guest, the Mike Hall inquest and other news
01/10/2018Val and Faith are surprised by a visit from a random listener, Allan, so we invite him to join us on the show. We all share our bike moments before kicking off the program with some news. The 30kph trial has started in the City of Yarra while in the Netherlands, Dutch cyclists are facing a mobile phone ban. The Mullum Mullum trail extension has opened and Australia scores a silver at the World Championships. The TAC reinstates cover for cyclists who are involved in accidents with stationary vehicles. We take a look at Jenica Brooke's excellent analysis of the Buckley Street Level Crossing Removal and the dire consequences for cyclists, read the whole thing here. Remembering Russell Mockridge

Saving Melbourne's cycling history: talking about Maurice Kirby Velodrome
27/08/2018On this weeks program Chris interviews Kim Nguyen, a resident in Melbourne's south-east about discovering a Noble Park velodrome with a big history.Kim talks about discovering a hidden cycling gem, the historic Maurice Kirby velodrome, earlier this year, only to find out literally by chance, that the entire area is slated for demolition by City of Greater Dandenong. This is the only velodrome remaining in the region and the council have no plans to resurface, rebuild or replace the historic venue. We talk about who was Maurice Kirby, his Nobel Park bicycle shop, Pedal Clubs of Victoria, his long career as a sports broadcaster on 3XY and Channel Nine, velodrome construction in 1954-1955 and it's gradual disappearance from local wayfinding.Kim discusses how people can get involved with his campaign to save the Maurice Kirby velodrome, including contacting him about any stories about learning to ride or using the velodrome to train and also sending questions to the Greater Dandenong

Melbourne Grand Prix of Cyclocross
20/08/2018Faith and Val are joined in the studio by Colin Bell, president of the Sunbury Cycling Club and dream builder at Essendon Fields Cyclocross. We share some news including the launch of Overlander by Rupert Guiness and the ICAN Noble Peace Ride as well as our respective bike moments. Talk turns to this weekend's Melbourne Grand Prix of Cyclocross and the community that has grown around the event both here and overseas. The coming weekend includes a Women's Forum on the Friday evening and racing over the weekend from balance bikes kids to Elite fields attracting international riders. Registrations are open until Wednesday. Lewis Ciddor rides the Tour Divide
06/08/2018Faith and Val are joined in the studio by endurance cyclist Lewis Ciddor. We swap bicycle moments before taking a look at local and overseas cycling news, particularly that affecting your transport options. Moreland Council have released their Draft Integrated Transport and Parking Strategy for feedback, but hurry, consultaion closes August 17th. Partially separated bike paths form part of the latest proposal for Sydney Road and the Walmer Street Bridge campaign is promised $200,000.00 towards a scoping study. Discussion turns to the 2018 Tour Divide mtb race and Lewis's inaugral effort, winning the 4400km race in fifteen days, two hours and eight minutes from a field of aproximately 160 participants. Lewis talks about his preparation for the ride, the bike he rode, the incredible route from Banff, Canada to the US-Mexican border, the 50,000m of climbing through some of the US's most stunning scenery and the fauna and flora as well as his recovery.
