At the same time as malicious attacks were taking place in the UK against their electoral commission and MPs , here in New Zealand the then-minister for the Government Communications Security Bureau, Andrew Little, revealed there were cyber attacks here. New Zealand's SIS, and GCSB, will both appear before the Intelligence and Security Committee on Tuesday. The Prime Minister Christopher Luxon spoke to Corin Dann.

Fielding early childhood teacher guilty of serious misconduct
25/03/2024 Duración: 04minA Feilding early childhood teacher who forced food out of children's mouths, smacked them and locked them in rooms has been censured and struck off. The Disciplinary Tribunal has found Pitter Patter Education Centre's owner Pauline Murphy guilty of serious misconduct and the teachers Code of Professional Responsibility. The Tribunal says Murphy's misconduct happened over more than a decade and included threatening behaviour towards employees, ill-treatment of children, and serious breaches of health and safety regulations. Midday Report presenter Charlotte Cook broke the story three years ago and has the details of the investigation. Cook spoke to Corin Dann.

Whakaari White Island owners appeal criminal conviction
25/03/2024 Duración: 02minThe owners of Whakaari White Island are appealing the criminal conviction against their company which managed access to the volcano until it erupted in 2019, killing 22 people. Whakaari Management is owned by three brothers - Andrew, James and Peter Buttle. Their lawyer, James Cairney, says the multimillion dollar conviction against the family-operated company "hangs heavy" on the family-owned business. It's one of five companies that were fined and order to pay millions of dollars in compensation for health and safety failings leading up to the 2019 catastrophe. Cairney spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Police in Gisborne investigating fatal party
25/03/2024 Duración: 02minPolice in Gisborne still need to talk to about 60 witnesses as they investigate a multiple stabbing at 21st birthday party where two people were killed and three injured. One of the two who died was the man celebrating his birthday, 21-year-old Chrysler Stevens Mark. The other was 30-year-old Kane Taare-Gray. RNZ reporter Ashleigh McCaull is at the police cordon at Lytton Road. McCaull spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

The United Kingdom has accused China of hacking its electoral commission, and targeting some of its MPs. In New Zealand, the then-minister for the Government Communications Security Bureau, Andrew Little, revealed in July 2021 that malicious cyber activity had been linked to the Chinese Ministry of State Security. New Zealand's SIS, and GCSB, will both appear before the Intelligence and Security Committee on Tuesday. The Minister for the SIS and GCSB, Judith Collins, has declined to comment on the allegations. The UK's deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden says taken together the government judges those actions demonstrate a clear and persistent pattern of behaviour that signal hostile intent from China. UK and US call out China over cyber-attacks
25/03/2024 Duración: 06minThe UK and US have called out China over what they say have been state sponsored cyber-attacks. The United Kingdom has accused China of hacking its electoral commission, and targeting some of its MPs. And the United States has charged seven Chinese nationals with conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The US has also imposed sanctions on a company it says was a front for the Chinese Ministry of State Security. The U.S. Treasury Department says APT31 is a collection of Chinese intelligence officers who carry out cyberespionage campaigns on behalf of the state. Politico's Senior Legal Affairs reporter Josh Gerstein spoke to Corin Dann.

25/03/2024 Duración: 05minThe Early Childhood Council says the Government's FamilyBoost rebate for pre-school education will be a relief for many parents, but describes it as more of a tax cut. From October, households earning no more than $180,000 can apply to be partially refunded for early childhood care costs. How much each family receives depends on how much they earn - the maximum rebate is $75 per week. Early Childhood Council chief executive Simon Laube spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

An independent review led by former police commissioner Mike Bush found Civil Defence officials were not prepared for the disaster, and were overwhelmed by its severity, speed and scale. They were overconfident about their ability to cope and took a best case scenario approach rather than preparing for the worst. He also says the national emergency management system is not currently fit for purpose and sets up good people to fail.
