A new survey shows Proposition 36, which seeks to toughen the penalties for certain crimes like retail theft, has overwhelming support from voters in the state. The poll by the Public Policy Institute of California found that 71 percent of those surveyed plan to vote for the measure. The support comes from people from both political parties, and even the Bay Area, which has the closest margin in the state, has 64 percent in favor of the measure, with only 32 percent opposed.

Governor Gavin Newsom is holding a session with state lawmakers, looking to keep gas prices down. For more, KCBS Radio's Margie Shafer and Eric Thomas were joined by KCBS Insider Phil Matier.

City officials in San Francisco are showing off a new tool to help fight crime. They're new mobile units which will have security cameras on top of a 22-foot mast that they'll roll out in high crime area. So how will they work? The police department has also been using drones to catch car-break in suspects and investigate sideshows. Now the SF Standard has uncovered emails that show the department did this even though they knew it was illegal.

The governors of two neighboring states are asking California Governor Gavin Newsom to reconsider his proposal to require oil refiners to store a backup supply of gas to prevent future price spikes.
