In the past few years, no one person has had as large an influence on the Santa Fe Animal Shelter as Executive Director, Mary Martin. This is the inspiring story of how she ended up here and helped save thousands of homeless pets.

Like most nonprofit animal shelters, we have always survived on the dedication and generosity of our community and donors. We are currently overpopulated, a challenge that makes it more difficult to guarantee the high standard of care that we provide to all shelter animals. We talk to Director of Behavior and Training, Hannah Padilla, about her strategy to rehabilitate traumatized and shy dogs. Her team puts in incredible time and effort to give these animals a fighting chance at finding homes.

Losing a pet is one of the most painful experiences an animal lover can endure. Now imagine caring for multiple terminally ill animals at once. This week we tell the story of Claire, one of our hospice fosters, and the remarkable strength she exhibits everyday for our most vulnerable shelter animals.

Lester is the sort of dog that probably would not have made it in other shelters. He was dejected when he arrived to us and would remain in the corner of any room he was brought to. Jamie, one of our own staff members, decided to give him a try and are now inseparable.

Rob agreed to lock himself in a kennel for 48 hours to raise awareness and funds for homeless animals. This is our podcast about the story which has been featured on Huffington Post, HLN, and other local media outlets.
