Mike Shinoda discusses the making of his fantastic debut solo album 'Post Traumatic', the paintings that were to become the albums artwork and the creative process in general. We also touch upon passing of his friend and Linkin Park bandmate Chester Bennington and how making the album was a means of coming to terms with that.It seems appropriate putting this episode online today, as I just saw that today is World Suicide Prevention Day.This is a slightly shorter episode than normal due to a busy schedule. James Lavelle of UNKLE discusses the new album 'The Road: Part 1' that come out Aug 18th. We also discuss his journey from creating Mo Wax Records when he was 18 up until this point. Taking in his meeting and collaborating with artists like Josh Homme, Ian Astbury, Chris Goss and Jeordie White etc. For an artists to come from a dance and hip hop background to end up producing Like Clockwork by Queens Of The Stone Age is an interesting transition from one genre to the another at a time when that really wasn't the norm. It would be fair that the paths created by artists such as James have made it the norm for todays musical and cultural landscape to be one that is happy to mix genres and cultures. Dan Searle, drummer with UK band Architects, talks about the loss of his twin brother Tom Searle, guitarist and songwriter for Architects. Its been a little over six months since Tom passed away due to cancer. On the eve of the bands North American tour Dan Searle contacted me about coming on Someone Who Isn't Me to discuss Tom's illness and its aftermath and how that informed their latest album 'All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us'. We spoke about how this has profoundly affected not only him and the rest of the band, but also the bands fanbase, what the future holds for the band, the beginnings of new music and moving forward. Daniel P Carter speaks to record producer Ross Robinson, an innovator with a unique approach to making albums, who has recorded the likes of The Cure, Slipknot, Blood Brothers, Korn, Glassjaw, Norma Jean, Limp Bizkit, Klaxxons, Cancer Bats, Red Fang, Headwound City etc etc. His outlook / approach to making albums is a spiritual and esoteric one that has produced some groundbreaking albums that altered the course of heavy music as a whole. Sound quality on this one may be a little quiet because even though I EQ'ed out some of the background noise, I found that if I raised the levels too much the sound of the sea and assorted background became quite intrusive, so get your headphones on and enjoy... The painting I made of Ross for the cover was actually my second attempt, the other one seemed to have lost its way a bit, but I think this one sums it up well.
